Started in the year 2008, Indian Premier League commonly known as IPL is the world most famous cricketing league. It just does not provide entertainment only but also has given many young players a platform to showcase their talent. Every year, to encourage these fresh players, BCCI gives an ‘Emerging Player of the Year’ award to the best young player of the season. Below is the list of all IPL’s Emerging Players till now.
A player must full-fill all the following criteria in order to be the ‘Emerging Player of the Year’ award:-
- A player must be of 26 years or below.
- Must have played only 5 or fewer test matches, 10 or fewer ODIs or T20Is.
- Has played only 25 or less IPL matches.
- Has never won the award in past.
Keeping these criteria in mind IPL every year choose an emerging player award. Below is the list of all IPL’s Emerging Players till 2018:-
1. 2008 – Shreevats Goswami (Royal Challengers Banglore)
Goswami played just 4 games for RCB in the 2008 edition but his knock of 52 against Delhi Daredevils was enough to make him the emerging player of that season. In four matches he played, he managed to score 82 runs with an average of 27.33.
2. 2009 – Rohit Sharma (Deccan Chargers)
The Hitman Rohit Sharma was the Emerging player in the second edition of the IPL. He scored 362 with the highest of 52 and was the third highest Indian run-getter. He also had a hattrick in his name and played a key role in Deccan Chargers’ title-winning race.
3. 2010 – Saurabh Tiwary (Mumbai Indians)
Saurabh Tiwary was the one of the main reason that Mumbai Indians made it through the Finals of the 2010 IPL. He scored 419 (Second highest among MI players that year) with an amazing strike rate of 135.59. He also scored 19 sixes that year.
4. 2011 – Iqbal Abdulla (Kolkata Knight Riders)
2011 was the year of change for the KKR. For the first time, the team was able to qualify for the last fours. Iqbal Abdulla grabbed everyone’s attention that year with his performance. He took 16 wickets at an average of 19.06 with an economy of mere 6.1.
5. 2012 – Mandeep Singh (Kings XI Punjab)
Mandeep Singh is one of the under-rated players of the IPL. This young lad opened the batting for the KXIP in 2012 along with legendary Adam Gilchrist. He scored 432 runs at a good strike rate of 126.31.
6. 2013 – Sanju Samson (Rajasthan Royals)
The U-19 World Cup player Sanju Samson was one of the most important players for the RR in the 2013 edition of the IPL. He helped RR to reach in the playoffs by scoring 206 runs.
7. 2014 – Axar Patel (Kings XI Punjab)
2014 was the golden year for the Kings XI Punjab. George Bailey led team made it through the finals for the very first time. Axar Patel was the only main spinner for the Kings in 2014. In 17 matches he played he took 17 wickets with a very healthy economy of 6.23.
8. 2015 – Shreyas Iyer (Delhi Daredevils)
In 14 matches Iyer played in 2015, he managed to score 439 runs with an average of 33.76 and a good strike of more than 128. These were enough to make him the winner of the emerging player of the season award.
9. 2016 – Mustafizur Rahman (Sunrisers Hyderabad)
Mustafizur Rahman more commonly known as ‘The Fizz’ was the first overseas player to won the ‘Emerging Player’ award. He took 17 wickets with an average of 24.76 and economy of 6.9 and helped SRH win their first IPL trophy and crushing RCB fans’ hearts again.
10. 2017 – Basil Thampi (Gujarat Lions)
Basil Thampi of the Gujarat Lions won the ‘Emerging Player’ award in the 9th edition of the IPL season because of his good bowling as a debutant. He took 11 wickets in the season.
11. 2018 – Rishab Pant (Delhi Daredevils)
2018 currently is the golden age for the future Indian star Rishab Pant. In 2018 IPL, he scored 684 runs with a very good average of 52.61 and at a whopping strike rate of 173.60. He also scored one hundred against SRH. Certainly, he made his international debut because of his IPL 2018 performance.
